How to convert web templates into native Gutenberg blocks?
Arbitrary web templates rely on conflicting CSS frameworks, random JavaScript libraries, and custom configs that prevent a clean one-to-one translation into WordPress. Because of this, developers are left with broken spacing and raw HTML dumps that require extensive manual cleanup anyway.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Nailed down inputs to a standard format before transfer
- 2Using AI agents with visual feedback loops or screenshotting to recreate layouts
- 3Switching to third-party page builders with Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers
- 4Doing manual cleanup and fixing broken spacing by hand
- 5Building one small section manually first, copying the block markup from the code editor, and feeding it to Claude as a format template
- 6Exporting frames as PNG instead of PDF for better readability by the AI
- 7Giving strict prompt instructions to use only specific containers and blocks without writing custom CSS
- 8Going one section at a time and manually fixing spacing and mobile responsiveness afterward

“Is there a reliable way to ask Claude to integrate my mockups (they are in Figma, I can export them in PDF or whatever) into WordPress, using GeneratePress builder?”source ↗
“ive tried this route before with ai and it usually gets confused about what's a core block vs a plugin block and starts spitting out shortcodes or just dumps raw html into a custom block.”source ↗
“i don’t understand the point of using Wordpress if you are creating full custom code that will not be compatible with any of Wordpress core features, builders, or plugins...?”source ↗
“Every template brings its own baggage. Different CSS frameworks, half the templates have random JS libraries baked in, some ship with their own JSON config files that don't map to anything in Gutenberg.”source ↗
“Best case, we were hitting maybe 60-70% translated cleanly. Never a real 1:1. The remaining 40% was always some combination of broken spacing, blocks that technically validated but looked wrong, or stuff that just didn't convert at all and needed manual cleanup anyway.”source ↗
