Can you change builder plans after construction starts?

Builders routinely refuse change orders for layout modifications to avoid closing delays, leaving buyers stuck with pre-determined configurations they cannot alter. This restriction prevents homeowners from installing desired features, such as switching from side-by-side to stacked laundry setups, creating a stressful and inflexible construction process.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Routing washer lines or dryer ducts across the room to accommodate stacked units
  2. 2
Paying for post-construction modifications out of pocket
  3. 3
Building a custom cabinet to hide misplaced utility lines
  4. 4
Applying for after-the-fact approval and explaining the oversight
  5. 5
Waiting to see if the HOA notices and hoping they do not say anything
  6. 6
    Running for HOA President
  7. 7
Checking municipal permits and HOA bylaws

We're having a house built, and didn't realize till it was too late that they installed what was needed for top load (side by side), and we were hoping to have front load stacked. What are my options?source ↗

I moved in to a new place and also made some changes without consulting the HOA. I got a letter from them asking for my project to be submitted for approval.source ↗

We just built a front deck and genuinely did not even think about HOA. They haven’t said anything but I’m so anxious now because we just realized after the fact we should have had it approved.source ↗
