How to get rid of oil polyurethane smell with closed windows

Harsh oil-based polyurethane finishes release lingering fumes that cause lightheadedness, dizziness, and sore throats even days after painting. Because the windows cannot be opened to air out the space, the toxic odor permeates furniture, bedding, and clothes, making the room unsafe to spend time in.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
    keeping windows open with fans
  2. 2
isolating in the master bedroom or office
  3. 3
running air purifiers in the living room and bedroom
  4. 4
Sleeping in another room on a couch until the smell fades
  5. 5
Leaving windows open for an extended time to help the fumes dissipate faster
