Can merchants send you to collections after a chargeback?

Merchants can legally pursue debts or send accounts to collections if a chargeback is lost or disputed, leaving businesses out of pocket despite completed work or consumers facing lingering demands. This leaves people trapped between banking dispute decisions and aggressive merchant recovery tactics, often resulting in threats of account bans or credit damage months after the fact.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
    Contacting customer support by phone
  2. 2
    Filing a credit card dispute
  3. 3
Documenting everything and ensuring physical card presence with matching names
  4. 4
Switching to alternative payment methods like crypto, bank transfer, cash, or check
  5. 5
Taking the client to small claims court for payment
  6. 6
Writing off the money as a loss and sending tax documentation

We had a very large amount on a job get a dispute chargeback. We had completed the job and even gone above and beyond for that specific client.source ↗

Chase really mismanaged this entire ordeal, and told us at least twice we would easily get the chargeback money back if we followed the process. Even with the entire dispute and review process they somehow ruled in the clients favor.source ↗

I really don't want to go through this process again. To know any client can do a chargeback at any given time, and no matter how much documentation we have of doing the job we still lose the $$.source ↗

Now, almost a year later, Expedia is contacting me demanding the $605.71 and says that if I don’t pay, it could potentially go to collections and I could be prevented from booking with Expedia Group in the future.source ↗
