Do I really need to self level my floor?
Flooring specs often allow a maximum variance, such as no more than a quarter-inch difference over a ten-foot span. However, beginners struggle to determine if their minor dips exceed these limits because they do not know whether to lay their level flat or press down on one end, which drastically changes the measurement. This confusion makes first-time DIYers second-guess pouring compound at all, fearing they will botch the job over an acceptable gap.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Skimming the low areas instead of pouring the entire floor
- 2Ignoring minor gaps and proceeding with the installation
- 3Asking online forums to clarify the correct measuring technique
- 4Learning to measure the gap under the level without pressing or tilting it
- 5Using floor patch or self-leveling compound to float the high and low spots

“Also, having second thoughts about actually self leveling considering the maximum lower gap is 4 millimeters, i.e. 1/6 of an inch, spread over 2 to 3 feet.”source ↗
“Too many stories of botched self-leveling out there and i'm doing this DIY job from scratch for the first time.”source ↗
“When I lay the 6ft level flat on a high point, I see about a quarter inch difference, so within the allotted give. But when I press done on one end, the gap at the other end rises to half an inch.”source ↗
“So I shouldn't be pressing down on the level at all? Just lay the level flat and measure the variance without putting any pressure on the level?”source ↗
“So I cannot have more than a 2mm difference over the span of 1 meter AND no more than a quarter inch difference over a 10 foot span?”source ↗
