Should I sell my paid off car to invest the cash?

Trading a reliable paid-off vehicle for cash to invest while leasing another can generate immediate capital and potential investment returns. However, this strategy carries the risk of replacing a dependable car with an older, higher-mileage vehicle that demands extra maintenance costs.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
keeping the current paid-off car and selling it later for a lower price
  2. 2
putting the cash from selling the car into a high yield savings account instead of stocks
  3. 3
Keep the paid-off car, maintain it well, and drive it for many years to avoid transaction costs and extra tax bills
  4. 4
Cut expenses elsewhere in the budget to free up cash for student loan payments instead of trading down
  5. 5
Pretend the car payment still exists and use the extra funds to build an emergency fund and make principal payments on student loans
  6. 6
Storing the car in a garage or commercial storage space while paying a friend or relative to drive it periodically
  7. 7
Selling the car, clearing the remaining loan balance, and purchasing a replacement vehicle upon return
  8. 8
putting more monthly payments toward paying off the truck
  9. 9
buying a reliable vehicle, paying it off quickly, and driving it forever

Would you keep the newer paid-off K4, or trade down and take the ~$8k in equity? My main concern is giving up a newer reliable car for an older/higher-mileage car that could require more maintenance.source ↗

my question is do i keep the truck or sell and save up for a 5-10k truck instead. Im kind of torn since I do have an extended warranty on my pickup and I do have around 5k of equity if I were to sell it privately.source ↗

Hi all, I will be moving out of the country (USA) for all of 2026. I own a 2024 honda civic sport, 10k left to pay it off. Its worth around $20k (has 30,000 miles) Is it worth it to garage it for a year and pay a buddy to drive it one a month? Or should I sell it and buy a new car when I get back.source ↗
