How are students bypassing AI detection?

Students evade detection by running text through 'humanizer' apps, manually retyping AI-generated words into blank documents, or memorizing AI essays to write out by hand during exams. Because kids constantly find new avenues around digital blocks, teachers are giving up on using computers in class altogether.

“I saw a student using their phone and have AI write an essay for them. Then they ran it through one of those "humanize AI" things that makes it sound less like AI. Then like took their phone and propped it up to next to their Chromebook and opened a blank google doc. Then I watched them proceed to type out the words on their phone into the google doc.”source ↗

“Yeah I’m done with computers in class. It’s absolutely out of control. Every time you find a way to block one avenue, the kids have already moved on to something else.”source ↗

“I had a student memorize an AI essay and then wrote it out by hand in an exam. It was very bizarre to see them correctly use North Korea as an example of nationalism in a unit about the French Revolution. Somewhere halfway through I realized what had happened…”source ↗
