Which way should my HVAC filter arrow face?

The airflow arrow on a home HVAC filter must always point toward the blower motor or in the direction the air is actually moving through the ductwork. Confusion over whether air moves upward, downward, or sideways leads people to install filters backward, which can restrict airflow and strain the system.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
    guessing the direction
  2. 2
keeping it the same way as previously installed
  3. 3
installing it either way since filters work regardless
  4. 4
taking a picture or note of the old filter's orientation before removal
  5. 5
following the general rule that arrows point toward the blower motor

Does the air flow up through the filter or down? It’s unnecessarily confusing.source ↗
