How to know if my HVAC air filter is the right size?
An air filter that sticks out from the slot or doesn't sit flush indicates the wrong dimensions, which allows unfiltered dust to bypass the filter and enter the system. Measuring the actual filter slot and comparing it against standard sizing ensures a proper fit that protects the equipment from debris buildup.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Using the incorrectly sized filters left by the previous owners
- 2Switching to a different filter dimension
- 3Using whatever filters the previous home owners used without verifying dimensions
- 4Cleaning the standard filters every 3 to 6 months or checking them every 2 weeks depending on dust levels.
- 5Checking spare filters left by the previous owner
- 6Measuring the filter grille or furnace slot
- 7Modifying or removing the guide rails to accommodate a larger filter size.

“I am wondering though why should the filter stick out like this. It sticks out about 6 inches from top and about 1 inch from each side. Should I buy like a 20x16x1 air filter instead then.”source ↗

“Ok I clearly see that I got the wrong filter and went to home depot and got some 16x20x1 filters to fix it. I am worried now should I hire someone to clean the coils since dust could have went inside.”source ↗
“Thanks! Weird that the manual says to clean every two weeks. Pulled these ones out and they were super clean.”source ↗

“Can you please clarify what size I need? I'm not sure if it's 20x10x4 or 20x10x1 as there is a rail that looks to be for 1" debth to slide in.”source ↗
“I went clean the filters today an only saw the two in the photo attached. The user manual talks about filters for Dual Barrier Coating (see photo of manual page). I’m assuming these types of filters are only found in certain units? I did not see anything like these on my unit.”source ↗
