Why is my engine coolant brown or gold?

Engine coolant can change to a dull brown or gold color, which often triggers panic about rust or premature fluid failure. This discoloration stops car owners from knowing whether the fluid is still safe to use or if it signals a mechanical problem that requires immediate attention.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
checking the coolant in other vehicles from the same dealer
  2. 2
searching online for potential causes like rust
  3. 3
Flush the cooling system properly and use manufacturer-specific coolant mixed with distilled water.

I recently brought this car and I was checking all my fluids today and noticed that my coolant colour looks likely a for dull brown which has made me panic because everywhere I've looked coolants look bright. Google also says it could be rust!!source ↗
