Why won't my dog listen to commands outside?
High-value distractions completely override standard training, causing dogs to ignore treats, names, and mastered commands outdoors. This disconnect makes owners feel like all previous training has vanished, leaving them unable to safely manage or train their dog in real-world environments.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1monitoring bowel movements for the next 72 hours
- 2practicing inside with treats
- 3working hard on leave it and out commands
- 4Using expensive nice treats or real steak jerky
- 5Starting training incrementally at the doorway, porch, and car before moving to parking lots
- 6Engaging the puppy with toys like tug or a flirt pole to make yourself more fun than the environment
- 7Enrolling in obedience classes
