Why won't my car go past 4k RPM when flooring it?
The car automatically shifts at 4,000 RPM instead of reaching the higher rev limiter, even when flooring the gas pedal. This prevents the engine from revving fully and makes the vehicle exceptionally slow to get up to speed. The restriction is often caused by a broken speed sensor, which may also trigger a lightning bolt and traction control warning light on the dashboard.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Manually shifting gears to see if it bypasses the limit.
- 2Checking basic maintenance items like the air filter and fuel filter.

“The car doesn't go past 4k rpm. It shifts fine and feels fine but weird because the limiter looks like it goes up to 6.5k. Anything I should check?”source ↗
“That was my issue, during driving down the road. Flooring it. It would shift at 4k not any above. Really really slow to get up to speed.”source ↗
“Just change a broken speed sensor now this lighting bolt with the traction control light is on”source ↗
