Are powered attic roof vents actually worth it?

Powered roof fans and alternative vents can cause confusion because people aren't sure if they live up to the hype or might actually harm attic airflow. Without knowing how these options compare to traditional whirlybirds or whether mismatched intakes will ruin the balance, homeowners struggle to choose the best ventilation setup during a reroof.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Looking at product websites and forums for reviews and comparisons to traditional whirlybirds
  2. 2
Retaining existing ridge cap vents and ensuring soffit vents are clear
  3. 3
Getting multiple quotes from different contractors
  4. 4
Looking around the neighborhood to see what other houses have installed

I'm getting a new roof installed on my 1955 ranch and I'm seeing/getting a lot of conflicting information on installing a ridge vent.source ↗

I've gotten four quotes for the roof so far, two contractors said I shouldn't add a ridge vent, one going so far as to say he'd need to check with the town as some municipalities require blocking off gable vents if a ridge vent is present, one contractor said 50/50 it doesn't really matter and one said I should install a ridge vent because the gable vents will then act as intakes rather than outlets...source ↗

I am going to reroof and get new insulation.source ↗

I keep reading that those fans can sometimes be bad, and I don't quite understand why.source ↗

Is this fine, or is there a better ventilation option? And what about the fan: good or bad?source ↗

I’m trying to decide on the best option going forward for my home as well.source ↗

Curious what experience folks have on these and if they live up to the hype, as well as home they might compare to something like a whirlybird.source ↗

I’m curious as to how these might affect overall airflow though if I didn’t also upgrade the intakes.source ↗
