Why do I have no free spending cash?

High fixed costs like rent consume most of the paycheck before discretionary spending is accounted for. This leaves people feeling perpetually broke and unable to make financial progress, highlighting the need to better track actual expenses.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
using written budgets to reflect reality
  2. 2
    tracking actual past spending
  3. 3
using the feeling of no free cash to motivate wiping out high-interest credit card debt
