How do you file taxes when a third party won't give you the forms?

Essential financial documents like an R185 form are sometimes withheld or missing because a third party is unresponsive or the account has been closed. This leaves taxpayers unable to determine interest amounts or report necessary figures on their annual tax return.

What the numbers show

Counted from the threads quoted below. How we count

  • People have been saying this in most months since August 2026.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Fill in the tax return using provisional or estimated figures and submit an amended return later if final figures become available
  2. 2
Use a reasonable estimate based on a small rate of interest for accounts paying low rates and explain it in the additional notes box
  3. 3
filling out sales tax forms stating zero income
  4. 4
planning to consult an accountant or CPA
  5. 5
searching online on the franchise tax board website and the IRS

“However, this solicitor never provided me an R185, and (since the estate has now been fully distributed, and the account closed) is no longer responding to emails. So I have no way to determine how much (if any) interest the inheritance sum accrued.”source ↗

“I'm now filling in my Tax Return for 2025-25, and should be including the relevant number in that Return. But I can't. Because I don't know the number and don't have any means by which to determine it.”source ↗
