Where is the best place to get a replacement engine or transmission?

When an engine block cracks beyond repair, drivers face the difficult choice between buying a whole new engine and rearranging parts or taking a gamble on an old used part from a scrapyard. This uncertainty leaves them wondering whether transmissions or engines can be reliably rebuilt and how long the process takes.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
    Searching local junkyards
  2. 2
Using online used auto parts aggregators like car-part.com
  3. 3
Buying a whole used engine and swapping parts
  4. 4
Searching scrapyard inventories online using car-part.com
  5. 5
Pulling a transmission yourself at a pick-n-pull yard
  6. 6
    Buying a remanufactured transmission online
  7. 7
Having a professional transmission shop rebuild the existing unit
