Why are service manuals and wiring diagrams so hard to find?

Manufacturers frequently leave essential service manuals and wiring diagrams off of their own websites. This forces people into a frustrating scavenger hunt just to find basic torque specs or teardown steps, making the search for documentation harder than diagnosing the actual appliance.
