Front end knocking sound when driving over bumps and stationary

Drivers experience a persistent knocking or clunking sound coming from the front of the vehicle when going over bumps or even when stationary, which can sometimes be felt directly at their feet. This issue often persists even after replacing components like front shocks, and can be linked to worn suspension parts like loose ball joints or idler arms.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Checking or inspecting the steering lock or steering column
  2. 2
Replacing components like shocks, brakes, rotros, tie rods, and upper control arms
  3. 3
Buying cheaper replacement parts or kits from brands like Detroit Axle or TRQ
  4. 4
Using a jack and a long bar to diagnose issues with sway bar end links or ball joints

“Got a clunk in the front end of my 2004 Chevy Tahoe Z71 (267K miles and 4WD). Replaced the front shocks--clunk is still there, but not as bad.”source ↗

“could anybody help me or give me any advice on what this knocking may be, i hear it going over bad terrain and bumps and it sounds like multiple knocks through the front of the car and when stationary with no ignition mode or anything this sound can be heard.”source ↗

“Having the keys in the car and even with ignition off it automatically detects my key fob so i don’t think it’s just the steering lock as i can turn the wheel fully, and i can feel it knocking at my feet when i do that”source ↗

“Avoid the Detroit axle stuff it doesn’t last long, had some car lots bring me those kits which is fine for their purpose but when they tell the buyer that you just replaced the front end when they sell it. Comes in 7 months later with the tires wearing bad because a ball joint and idler arm loose as hell.”source ↗
