How to interview for an internal HR transfer without system experience

When moving into a new internal role like Team Relations or Compensation without direct software experience like UKG, candidates struggle to talk about practical system knowledge beyond basic tasks like requesting PTO. Because there is no hands-on technical assessment during the process, applicants find it difficult to verbally convey their software readiness. This lack of a practical way to demonstrate system familiarity stops experienced professionals from effectively bridging their general HR background with specific tool requirements.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Framing the software as the core system of record for employee data rather than just a PTO app
  2. 2
Highlighting operational background, compliance, attention to detail, and quick learning ability for new systems
  3. 3
Leveraging vendor training resources, community pages, and release webinars to learn the platform
  4. 4
Leading with past compensation study projects
  5. 5
Describing actual problems solved using Excel rather than just listing functions
  6. 6
Reading up on equity comp and market matching

there’s no practical side of the process, so how can I convey verbally?source ↗

Also, any basic background of UKG that I can mention so I have something more to say than 'thats where I request PTO' would be appreciated.source ↗
