Why does my kitten play and roll in the litter box?

Kittens often view clean litter as a toy, getting inside to roll around and explore. This playful behavior causes their fur to trap the litter, which they then track all over the house when they leave.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
taking out a toy and getting his attention on that instead
  2. 2
telling him 'thats enough now' to make him stop

He likes to get in it and roll around. His fur traps some of the litter and he tracks it around the house.source ↗

He would pee in the litterbox (doesn't always burry it btw!) then once he leaves the litterbox he poops on the floor next to it.source ↗

He doesn't do it all the time, sometimes he does poop in the litterbox, but it happened two days in a row nowsource ↗
