Why does my monitor go black when lights turn on?

Turning on light switches, opening doors, or running nearby appliances like a clothes dryer causes computer screens to briefly go black for a few seconds. This sudden blanking leaves users confused and unable to figure out whether the issue stems from faulty cords or an electrical problem.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
plugging the monitor into a different outlet on a separate circuit
  2. 2
    getting a cheap line-interactive UPS
  3. 3
Looking into surge protectors, AVR units, or uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)
