Why is it so hard to cancel digital subscriptions?

Subscription companies use multi-step confirmation dialogs, require specialized account agent changes, or force phone interactions to prevent users from leaving. This design traps customers in unwanted charges and delays refunds for weeks.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Using bank or credit card dashboards to block recurring payments
  2. 2
Calling customer support to speak to a human
  3. 3
Hiring a new agent for a lower cost and waiting for the transfer to occur before attempting cancellation
  4. 4
Checking bank and credit card bills frequently
  5. 5
Avoiding third-party booking sites like eDreams entirely
  6. 6
contacting the bank or credit card company to stop recurring payments
  7. 7
Escalating with customer service multiple times
  8. 8
Contacting the city or state department of consumer affairs to file a complaint
  9. 9
Referring to the original contract document with the acquired provider
  10. 10
    Consulting a lawyer

ADT says we have a contract with them until 2030 (!!!) and we would have to pay the entirety of the contract amount in order to stop service.source ↗

The kicker is there is no contact with ADT. They are unable to give us anything in writing that says we signed a contact with them, let alone for that long.source ↗

I don't know if anyone else has tried to cancel a subscription, but they really don't want to make it easy! I was using the **Custom Facebook Feed plugin,** which was decent enough, but no longer need it, so I have to go through a 4-page dialog to say goodbye!source ↗

I tried to cancel the service but legalzoom would not allow without a new agent on record for my llc.source ↗

This took a few weeks and now legal zoom will not refund the $449.source ↗

I have been on the phone with them and have been over and back in emails and they are refusing to refund.source ↗

So I cannot cancel. I am a busy person, including dealing with stage 4 cancer (for real) and I can't just end a subscription when I need to?source ↗
