Do small businesses actually want cash flow statements?
Most small business owners only want to know if there is enough money for payroll this month rather than looking at historical statements. Furthermore, standard software struggles to produce them well, leaving owners overwhelmed by complex balance sheet and income statement accounts.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Doing cash flow reporting and forecasting manually in Excel
- 2Relying on mid-month bank reconciliations to check cash on hand and outstanding items
- 3Using Caseware or Engagement to manually build statements
- 4Using a refresher
- 5Making educated guesses on categorizations

“I would definitely need a refresher but I know that you start at net income and tie to cash.”source ↗
“But in a real-world business setting with a million BS / IS accounts I might get overwhelmed.”source ↗
“And the categorizations of finance / investing / operating (I think those are the categories lmao) definitely forgot, but could make educated guesses.”source ↗
“So the SOCF isn’t a muscle I work often lol.”source ↗
“Most small business owners want to know if there's money for payroll this month, not a statement. So no, not really.”source ↗
“So my question is, do small businesses want accurate historical cash flow statements? Or do they not use them since Quickbooks can’t produce one well? Curious for anyone that has their own firm or experience with small businesses if that’s actually something people want…or if it’s only useful in the bubble of F500 that I’ve been in lol”source ↗
