I planted the wrong grass seed, how do I fix it?

Accidentally grabbing the wrong bag of seed can leave your lawn with unwanted clumping varieties like K31. To fix this and successfully grow grass this season, you must decide if it is too late to turn back or if you should rake the newly laid seed out of the soil to start over with a better bag.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Raking out the newly laid seed immediately
  2. 2
Stopping watering to let the seed fail
  3. 3
Letting it grow and killing it later with glyphosate to reseed
  4. 4
    Watering the lawn more frequently
  5. 5
Grabbing whatever seed is nearby to fill empty spaces
  6. 6
Buying more seed and soil to try patching the area again
