Why isn't my grass seed germinating?

Heavy rains and storms can wash away newly laid seed and straw before they have a chance to grow. Even with meticulous soil prep and strict daily watering schedules, seeds sometimes fail to sprout after weeks of waiting. This ruins the lawn and leaves bare dirt patches that quickly fill with weeds.
