Why do books never balance late at night?

Fatigue causes arithmetic errors and unidentifiable discrepancies to slip past during late-night reconciliation sessions. This forces financial workers to either take frustrating shortcuts or spend hours hunting for phantom numbers instead of finishing their work.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
tossing things into suspense or miscellaneous accounts
  2. 2
    ignoring immaterial discrepancies
  3. 3
doing a quick Ctrl+F to remove curse words before sending work to managers
  4. 4
    Calling customer support multiple times
  5. 5
Manually calculating expected net totals based on cost of goods sold and quantities sold
  6. 6
Reconciling transactions in layers using item-level exports
  7. 7
searching for someone on Upwork or bringing a specialist onto the team to setup and build out the system properly
