How to remove a rounded nut without special tools

Standard sockets and vice grips often fail to fit or grip when a fastener is rounded and located in a tight, inaccessible space without a proper hex or Allen imprint. This leaves people unable to remove the part quickly using only basic tools, forcing them to look for alternative improvised removal methods.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
borrowing a pair of vice grips from a neighbor or auto parts store loaner program
  2. 2
hammering a slightly smaller socket onto the rounded fastener
  3. 3
using penetrating oil and a nut/bolt extractor socket
  4. 4
Using an impact wrench to zip the nut on quickly without holding the stud
  5. 5
Cutting the old link off during removal
