Why is my battery terminal loose but still won't come off?
Corrosion and lead oxidation fuse the terminal clamp tightly to the battery post even when the bolt is fully removed. Pulling or prying aggressively often bends the clamp or damages the internal battery post before the connection breaks free, preventing you from finishing the battery replacement.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Wedging a flathead screwdriver in the slot between the two halves to spread them apart
- 2Completely removing the through-bolt
- 3Unbolting the terminal from the wire
- 4Cutting the terminal off and replacing it with a new one
- 5pop the broken stud out of the negative terminal and plop the new battery in
- 6Soaking in baking soda and water
- 7Using WD-40
- 8Trying channel locks
- 9Wedge a flat head screwdriver or pry tool into the clamp split to pop it loose.
- 10Grab the connector with pliers and wiggle or twist it until it breaks free from the corrosion.
