How to permanently remove an old home security system
Permanently shutting down an unwanted security panel requires taking the unit off the wall, shoving the wires back, and installing a blank wallplate. The main challenge is determining whether it is safe to cut the exposed wires. Leaving the non-functional system in place means dealing with a unit that gets in the way and incessantly beeps every 24 hours until manually canceled.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Unscrewing the unit from the wall, cutting the wires, stuffing them into the hole, and covering the opening with a blank wallplate or patching the drywall.
- 2Pressing cancel on the keypad every 24 hours to temporarily stop the beeping
- 3Leaving the battery disconnected and removing the keypad from the wall
- 4Finding the power wires in the panel and unplugging them or disconnecting the circuit
