Can you replace just the plastic tail light cover or the whole assembly?

You usually cannot replace just the clear or red outer plastic cover on modern vehicles because tail light assemblies are sealed as a single unit at the factory. Broke or cracked covers require buying and installing the entire assembly, though DIY replacement or red repair tape offers a low-cost fix compared to professional repair quotes.
