Why do my students refuse to read directions?

Students immediately claim they are confused and shut down before even looking at an assignment. Instead of reading the directions, they expect constant hand-holding, forcing teachers to read entire tests out loud or repeat a personal set of instructions for every student. This refusal to try stops them from attempting the work independently and pushes teachers to practically give away the answers.
