How do you transition out of a generalist IT management role?

Generalist IT managers trapped in broad roles often hit a salary ceiling and struggle to pivot because their experience feels too scattered to market effectively. Without choosing between deep technical specialization or scaling up to a larger organization's leadership track, they end up unable to tailor their resumes for higher-paying director or specialized positions.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Upskilling and obtaining specialized certifications in fields like cybersecurity, CMMC, or compliance
  2. 2
Creating multiple tailored resumes highlighting either technical skills or people management experience
  3. 3
Conducting informational interviews and coffee chats with people in target roles or industries
  4. 4
Transitioning to specialized internal tracks like IT Infrastructure Manager or Gov Cybersecurity

I honestly don’t know what roles I could realistically pivot into. Do I need to specialize in something first and work my way back into management?source ↗

After almost 11yrs as an IT Mngr, I didn't have a whole lot to look back on. I learned that I needed to specialize in one area. I also like being a generalist but needed to make more money and that isn't going to happen as a generalist.source ↗

I am in the similar spot as OP, but only difference is I manage lots of projects with vendors in IT / OT... Wouldn’t that count as people management and enable me to move on to a directors role?source ↗

Your biggest challenge will be creating a resume that is tailored to the position you are looking for.source ↗
