Is garden soil safe for food if animals poop in it?

Repeated animal defecation in garden beds creates fears of severe bacterial contamination, like E. coli and parasites, making people afraid to eat their harvest. Without clear information on whether to remove the topsoil or pull up new plants, gardeners are left wondering if they can ever grow edible herbs again or must permanently switch to ornamental flowers.
