How to stop animals from digging holes in my lawn at night

Nournal animals like raccoons and skunks dig up lawns to hunt for grubs and underground food sources. This destructive foraging leaves yards covered in holes, completely ruining the turf.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them β€” and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
    Installing motion-sensitive lights
  2. 2
    Using motion-activated water sprinklers
  3. 3
Treating the lawn to control grubs
  4. 4
Calling Animal Control to trap and relocate the animals
  5. 5
Grinding down stumps, bringing in topsoil or dirt to level the ruts, and adding grass seed
  6. 6
Renting a sod stripper to remove damaged sod, leveling the dirt beneath, and laying the sod back down
  7. 7
Pokings holes or aerating to relieve soil compaction before raking, leveling, and seeding
  8. 8
    Using pellet guns and firearms
  9. 9
Setting traps and relocating the animals
  10. 10
    Using hunting dogs
  11. 11
    Setting up traps with bait
  12. 12
Identifying the animal based on the specific type of damage
  13. 13
Treating the lawn for grubs to stop animals from digging
  14. 14
guessing based on local wildlife known to eat grubs or insects
  15. 15
    walk the dog more
  16. 16
wait it out until the dog's energy reduces
  17. 17
put in a run path with mulch
  18. 18
hose down the urine afterward to dilute it
  19. 19
grow clover or other lawn alternatives that handle shade
  20. 20
fence off parts of the backyard and re-seed heavily with fescue
  21. 21
Applying grub killer products like Sevin or 24 hr grub killer
  22. 22
    Using beneficial nematodes
