Why does my car engine cut out after driving for a while?

An engine can die after thirty to forty minutes of driving, behaving as though it is out of fuel despite a full tank, and then refuse to restart for an hour or two until it cools down. This sudden loss of power and shutdown leaves drivers stranded and unable to rely on their vehicle for daily use.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Loosening the fuel filler cap to relieve negative pressure in the tank
  2. 2
Replacing various parts such as the battery, battery terminals, fuel pump, starter, and alternator
  3. 3
Selling the car to a family member for scrap price and financing a new vehicle
  4. 4
Restarting the car to make it behave normally for a few seconds before cutting out again
  5. 5
    Replacing a clogged catalytic converter
  6. 6
    Changing the battery
  7. 7
Waiting for the car to sit untouched for about 15 minutes to get it to start again
  8. 8
    Replacing relays and battery terminals
  9. 9
Disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes and clearing codes
  10. 10
    waiting for a tow home
  11. 11
using a multimeter and tools to investigate
  12. 12
checking fuel pump, fuel filter, and timing
  13. 13
using starting fluid to verify spark and fuel issues
  14. 14
    Calling an auto electrician
  15. 15
    Running a diagnostic scanner
  16. 16
Checking voltage with the car on
  17. 17
    Replacing alternator brushes
  18. 18
Running the engine directly from a fuel bottle bypassing the fuel filter

And once I've driven about 30 or 40 mins it starts cutting out and acts like its running out of gas. It'll die and not start for an hour or 2 till it cools down then it'll start right up.source ↗

I was driving down the road today when my engine died, it was rather sudden and felt like it had a small sputter as if it was out of gas. Now it turns over but still but refuses to start and again sounds like there's no gas.source ↗

It won't let revs go above 1.5K if I slowly rev it up, and then wont accept any gas pedal input until revs drop to around 1k.source ↗

cars been having some serious starting problems starts only when I haven’t touched for about 15 minutes drives but turns off and won’t start again before I get too far does this mean I need a crank shaft sensor ?source ↗

a problem started where the car would shut off while driving.source ↗

the issue is that I already had the alternator repaired (it had worn-out brushes), but the problem persists—now the car is dead again...source ↗

la carga baja de los 12.5V y se apaga el motor. Le cambiamos los carbones al alternador pero el problema sigue, y lo peor de todo no siempre hace la pana, es aleatorio y despues de que el auto esta encendido por un rato.source ↗

Now, when it starts, it idles completely normally, but as soon as I give it any throttle, it immediately stalls.source ↗

It still doesn’t start normally and is extremely difficult to start.source ↗

Randomly, the car began to slowly lose power and acceleration before completely shutting off.source ↗

He drives it daily and depends on it, but we can not figure out what is wrong.source ↗

We've considered the idea it might be an electrical issue but we aren't really savvy enough to check all the electrics on our own.source ↗

Had my old car do this, I would floor it and it would barely move.source ↗

Then it's as if something snapped it fingers and the issue reappeared. No warning or any lacking of power before it.source ↗

Changed the battery and it was all good for a day but died while I was driving.source ↗
