How to check if a used laptop has an enterprise lock
Used enterprise laptops often arrive restricted by Windows Autopilot, Intune tenant enrollments, or persistent hardware locks like supervisor passwords and BitLocker. These security measures can completely block you from resetting the device, reinstalling Windows, or accessing the hard drive even when you have the correct recovery password.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1checking BIOS passwords and persistence modules manually
- 2performing a factory reset and testing the out-of-box setup experience for corporate login prompts
- 3Booting into Hiren’s BootCD
- 4Using a Rufus USB with Windows installation media
- 5Entering the BitLocker recovery key via command prompt or reset screens
- 6Attempting to modify BIOS settings (such as changing RAID to AHCI)

“So basically i am at wit’s end. I know the bitlocker key is accurate because i have had to use it to open cmd prompt or select the drive when trying to do a reset. But for the life of me i can’t reset the device or reinstall windows on it.”source ↗
“I also have a rufus usb with win11 that i tried a new installation with to no avail, because the drive does not show up as an option to be overwritten due to the bitlocker it won’t let me unlock in spite of having the password.”source ↗
“I'm buying a used ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 (AMD) from a local refurb shop and want to make sure it isn't locked to an enterprise tenant (Windows Autopilot / Azure AD) or hardware locked (Supervisor Password / Computrace).”source ↗
