Why does my cat wake me up at 3 AM?

Constant nighttime yowling and early morning wake-up calls disrupt sleep multiple times a night, leaving owners exhausted and grouchy. This chronic sleep deprivation breeds feelings of guilt and resentment that make it hard to cope.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Treating the cat as a furry alarm clock
  2. 2
Accepting it as better than a phone alarm
  3. 3
letting him sleep on the bed
  4. 4
wearing headphones or earplugs while sleeping
  5. 5
    playing music while sleeping
  6. 6
trying to play with him using a small crinkle mouse after work
  7. 7
playing with the cat right before bed to tire them out
  8. 8
setting alarms to feed the cat late at night or early morning
  9. 9
ignoring the cat and using earplugs
  10. 10
using a water pistol to deter the cat
  11. 11
locking the cat out of the bedroom or in a bathroom
  12. 12
using an automatic wet food feeder with ice packs
