Doing the job of a higher role without the promotion or pay

Companies often exploit employees by letting them take on duties far above their pay grade for years, only to pass them over for external hires or less-qualified candidates when promotions open up. This leaves workers trapped under toxic management expecting unrealistic output, forcing many to choose between burning out or quitting entirely.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
    finding a new job
  2. 2
quitting abruptly without a new job lined up
  3. 3
staying in the position while quietly checking out mentally
  4. 4
giving extended notice periods to coast through the final weeks without feeling responsible for outcomes
  5. 5
relying on personal savings, a partner's income, or health insurance coverage to safely exit toxic environments
  6. 6
looking for a new job or leaving the ecosystem
  7. 7
    venting in internal slack channels
  8. 8
Coaching the manager to follow corporate policy consistently
  9. 9
Requiring documentation for any exceptions made to company policy
  10. 10
Investigating whether the favored employee requires official accommodations
  11. 11
    Resigning immediately without notice
  12. 12
Looking for a new job immediately
  13. 13
Sending a public message calling out the manager
  14. 14
Leaving the job for the private sector
  15. 15
Ventilating frustrations online to people who understand
  16. 16
Searching /r/managers or /r/askamanager for similar concerns
  17. 17
Following good employee accountability checklists and trying to be direct and transparent
  18. 18
Deciding whether to put up with the culture or leave
  19. 19
leaving the firm for another company that uses straightforward title structures

staying calm and acting like recruiters reaching out is normal
  22. 22

  24. 24
    Going to therapy

Getting back in the gym or finding physical exercise
  26. 26
requesting the written company policy rather than the oral version
  27. 27
leaving work for the day to clear one's head
  28. 28
    considering resignation
  29. 29
    throwing axes to process frustration

I quit! Without going into detail, I was performing many duties of a role above my pay grade for a couple years. When the opportunity came to promote me into the role, they hired external instead.source ↗

Nine years ago I was in a toxic situation with management expecting miracles from me and the team I managed. When I gave a realistic reaction to what they were demanding, I was written up for not being a team player and not being positive enough.source ↗

I started this NPO job several months ago. At first, it seemed great! I have 10 YoE and decided, once one of my contracts came to an end, I wanted to pivot to a new mission and focus as opposed to finding more contracts. I did, but now I'm feeling a lot of regret.source ↗

One of our managers clearly seems to favour one particular employee.source ↗

Another employee made a similar mistake and was pulled into a meeting and given a fairly serious warning. That employee later came to HR and said they felt they were being treated differently.source ↗

I raised the inconsistency with the manager, but they basically said they know the employee well and that there are “reasons” for being more flexible with them.source ↗
