Why are Shopify payouts held and put on a rolling reserve?

Payment processors place sudden rolling reserves and payout holds during peak sales periods like Q4 based on isolated events like customer-requested cancellations. This locks up a significant percentage of sales for up to 120 days, which creates brutal cash flow constraints for high-volume stores and forces merchants to scramble for backup processors.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Applying for alternative backup payment gateways like Airwallex or Whop
  2. 2
Routing a portion of volume through alternative processors while keeping a trickle on the primary platform
  3. 3
Submitting compliance documentation including supplier invoices, inventory photos, and fulfillment records
  4. 4
Verifying the premise through the gateway's dashboard or notice before changing checkout
  5. 5
Keeping compliance evidence ready such as data-flow maps, processor lists, and consent text
  6. 6
Asking the gateway in writing which specific control failed and what evidence clears it
  7. 7
sending a formal Notice of Dispute

Gumroad is holding over $5,100 of my money and won't tell me when they'll pay it outsource ↗

Support keeps telling me the money is still on my account and hasn't been written off, but they also say they can't manually release it and can't give me any date for when it will actually be paid.source ↗

At this point I'm seriously uncomfortable keeping sales going through Gumroad while they keep holding more and more of the balance with no payout date.source ↗

10% reserve for 120 days is brutal if you’re doing serious volume. I’d definitely get a backup processor live now rather than wait and hope Shopify removes it.source ↗

Over the last couple of weeks, I've noticed a sharp increase in Indian D2C and Shopify brands getting their payment gateway payouts temporarily frozen or placed on verification holds.source ↗

How are early-stage brands here tackling this without spending a fortune on corporate tech lawyers?source ↗

Shopify held payouts on my 30-day-old store after I cancelled ONE order at the customer's requestsource ↗

Outcome: 10% reserve on all sales for 120 days. Timing is fun since that window covers Sep, Oct, Nov (BFCM), Dec, basically my entire Q4.source ↗
