Is it okay to skip a networking event if I'm not prepared?
Skipping a networking event when you feel unprepared or have conflicting commitments won't hurt your chances if bigger career fairs or other opportunities are coming up later. Trying to force attendance without preparation or by heavily disrupting your work schedule often adds unnecessary stress when alternative options are available.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Skipping the initial event to wait and attend a later career fair
- 2Preparing thoroughly for subsequent recruiting events
- 3Skipping the event entirely because it is just a job

“I had planned on going, but something personal came up, and I wasn't very prepared for the event tomorrow in the first place. Will I be fine, and/or better off just skipping it and going to the full-on business/accounting career fair that my school is hosting later this month?”source ↗
“Received a few offers recently with invites to offer parties. How important is attending these events? Is it worth missing work/leaving early from work and rearranging your schedule to attend?”source ↗
