Why is my car steering stiff and chirping when turning?
Startup and turning trigger a subtle chirping noise accompanied by noticeable steering stiffness. While tie rods might seem like the culprit, the pivoting issue appears to originate further down the steering mechanism.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Refilling the power steering fluid
- 2Replacing the drive belts
- 3Checking tie rod boots and play
- 4Inspecting pitman and idler bearings
- 5Testing steering components manually

“Thought it was my tie rods at first but the boots looked okay and no play in the outer or inner in my opinion. Looks like the odd pivoting is further than that”source ↗
