How to tell my child about their biological father

Finding the right words is incredibly difficult when a young child suddenly asks who their real dad is. Because there never seems to be a perfect time to explain the situation, parents often delay the conversation for years. This secrecy frequently backfires, leaving older children feeling deeply betrayed when they eventually uncover the truth on their own or through a DNA test.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Trying to be as close to the truth as possible and being vague about addiction problems
  2. 2
Taking the secret to the grave
  3. 3
Trickle-truthing the child over a period of several years
  4. 4
Having the mother deliver the news to avoid creating emotional distance with the father
  5. 5
Waiting for the child to discover it independently via commercial DNA testing

“I found out that my daughter was fathered by someone else when she was 3 years old. She is now turning 17 and I have never told her the truth, and neither has her mother, I always meant to but it just never seemed to be the right time. I have not been with her mother in over a decade and I don’t really know how she feels about telling her but as my daughter is approaching adulthood I have begun to wonder if she deserves to know? Is there any point in telling her at this point?”source ↗

“It’s me, I am someone who has found out via 23andme except I still have no idea who my father is just that my father who I thought was my father is not my father :)”source ↗

“My husband and I got together when I was 6 months pregnant with someone else who abandoned us. He was there at the birth and cut the cord and has been dad ever since. We told him this year actually.”source ↗
