Why do parents keep asking for my personal phone number?

Parents often ask for personal phone numbers to make communication easier, but sharing them compromises teacher privacy and risks after-hours harassment. Without a secure, official communication boundary, teachers are left vulnerable to unsolicited contact outside of school hours.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Using school email exclusively for communication
  2. 2
Setting up a secondary burner or Google Voice number
  3. 3
Directing parents to call the main classroom phone and leave a voicemail
  4. 4
Sending vague stock letters home to prompt students to share details
  5. 5
Relying on children to tell their parents what happened
  6. 6
Sending general class emails about disturbances without mentioning specific students

I'm a newer teacher and had a parent ask for my number after school because they said it'd be easier than emailing whenever something comes up with their kid.source ↗

Maybe I'm being overly cautious but having parents I barely know walking around with my personal number sounds like a terrible idea.source ↗

As a teacher I wish this info reached parents. I think that it’s important all parents understand the complexities in their child’s classroom.source ↗

I had a colleague who would send a class email telling parents about general disturbances and asking them to talk to their children.source ↗
