Said It Here

Do I really need a third-party spam filter?

Built-in protections often catch the same junk as layered third-party tools, making extra contracts hard to justify. However, relying solely on native solutions can cause high rates of false positives and negatives. Making these built-in filters effective requires administrators to manually build and maintain custom rules themselves.

“Our third-party email spam filtering contract is due for renewal soon, and we're considering whether it's still necessary.”source ↗

“Given that these protections are already included in our Microsoft licensing, I'm questioning whether a third-party solution such as Mimecast or Proofpoint offers enough additional value to justify the cost.”source ↗

“Defender alone was awful for our ~4k mailbox setup. There is not much at all to tune there, we are fully licensed A5 and had malware, junk, etc all set. Way too many false positives and negatives.”source ↗

“moved away from a layered setup to just the built-in stuff a couple years back. haven't regretted it, the false positives from the third party were driving everyone insane and the native filtering caught basically the same stuff anyway.”source ↗

“Full defender here. I can say I’ve got a lot of EXO mail flow rules to complement what Defender does. It is highly effective, but it’s all on me vs a Checkpoint or Abnormal product.”source ↗
