Why do school key cards stop working after hours?

School key cards and swipe access often deactivate unexpectedly right after dismissal or early in the morning, locking teachers out of the building. This leaves staff stranded outside or trapped in courtyards, forcing them to resort to drastic measures like hopping fences just to prepare for their classrooms.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
emailing an administrative assistant for special access
  2. 2
requesting extended badge access from administration
  3. 3
hoping a gate or fence to get out

I teach in a K-8 district and we just learned while showing up for Back to School Night that our swipes stop working at 5pm (dismissal is 3:30).source ↗
