Why am I getting locked out of my account when using the correct password?
Intermittent platform lockouts can occur following authentication updates like passkey rollouts, blocking users and admins from signing in for up to a few hours despite entering correct credentials. This unexpected lockout prevents access to organizational accounts and disrupts workflows without an immediate fix from changing passwords.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Changing the password temporarily
- 2Turning off passkeys or switching back to an authenticator app
- 3Contacting platform support
- 4Ensuring user accounts are not frozen due to unrecognized IP addresses or VPN usage
- 5Increase CachedLogonsCount via GPO or registry to allow offline logins
- 6Repair the secure channel directly from the domain controller using Reset-ComputerMachinePassword
- 7Roll back the problematic KB update temporarily
- 8Opening the platform in a private or incognito window
- 9Using a different browser or device
- 10Choosing 'use another method' instead of the passkey prompt
- 11Contacting customer support
- 12Opening Task Manager, launching an administrator Command Prompt, and disabling Fast Startup using the command powercfg /h off before rebooting
- 13Switching web browsers (e.g., trying Safari)
- 14Checking official status pages for incident updates
- 15Turning off phone and logging out for the rest of the day
