Why does my kitchen sink gurgle when the other side runs?

The gurgling and whooshing sounds happen because air is being sucked into the drain while water runs in the opposite sink. This glugging water noise often leaves people without plumbing knowledge feeling worried and scared about how bad the issue might be.
