Baby gets on all fours but won't crawl

Infants often get stuck on all fours or their bellies, dropping down or crying in frustration when toys are just out of reach. This stalls their mobility and leaves them dependent on parents to move or pull them upright.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Placing toys just out of reach to encourage movement
  2. 2
Giving the baby more unstructured floor time
  3. 3
Physically moving the baby's legs and feet to demonstrate the motion
  4. 4
Removing pants to give the baby better traction on carpets or hard floors
  5. 5
Showing videos of other babies crawling
  6. 6
Encouraging alternative forms of mobility like army crawling, scooting, or pulling to a stand
  7. 7
Providing opportunities to climb, tumble, and play on the floor to build coordination

“My son is 8 months (almost 9) and still isn’t crawling. I give him around an hour of floor time every day, I try putting toys just out of reach and he’ll get on all fours, but then just drops down on his stomach.”source ↗

“I can tell he gets frustrated that he can’t move the way he wants to and feel like he’ll be much happier and less needy when he can move around.”source ↗

“My daughter is 10 months and still isn’t crawling. She gets really frustrated on her belly and mostly just flares her arms/legs out. It almost seems like she doesn’t know how to get her knees underneath her, and she gets mad when I try to help.”source ↗

“She LOVES standing and constantly wants to be upright, but she can’t pull herself up on her own yet. She does army crawl a little on hardwood, but seems much more interested in standing than crawling.”source ↗
