Why is my estimated fuel range fluctuating and inaccurate?
Fuel range displays frequently swing up and down at random because the computer recalculates remaining miles based on your immediate driving conditions and recent fuel consumption. This erratic behavior makes it impossible to trust how far you can actually drive before running out of gas, leaving you guessing whether the reading is correct.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Driving the vehicle until the check engine light comes back on to force a diagnostic code
- 2Seeking second opinions from different repair shops and dealerships
- 3Using the trip odometer to drive a set distance and consistently filling up at regular intervals the old school way.

“the display goes up and down at random. I'll park and turn the car off at 230 miles to E and a few hours later I come back to it displaying 280 or more and then RAPIDLY drop as I start to drive..”source ↗
“Yesterday I brought it back into the dealership and today they are saying again, they can't do anything unless they have a code.”source ↗
“I just got a new car today, it’s a Chevy sonic LT 2016 and I was aware the gas gauge was broken when I got it but they told me that it still told you how many km are remaining until empty, well I was driving around today and it doesn’t, this is that it shows on the little screen. Should I be worried about this and about how much would it be to fix”source ↗
“I was driving around with it for hours td, that’s why I was confused, I’ll try and put some gas into it trm and see if that helps”source ↗
