Is it okay to raise a child in a one-bedroom apartment?

Living in a one-bedroom apartment long term brings a lot of guilt about whether it is okay for a growing child. Parents worry about lacking enough empty bedrooms, leading many to decide against having more children rather than face these space limitations.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Giving the child the bedroom while the parent sleeps in a nook off the living room
  2. 2
Relying on nearby parks and green spaces
  3. 3
Joining a waiting list for a two-bedroom rental
  4. 4
Putting the two older children in a shared bedroom and giving the baby a separate room
  5. 5
Keeping the two older children in their rooms and having a hypothetical third child share a room with the parents until older
  6. 6
Limiting family size strictly to the number of available empty bedrooms
  7. 7
Using a playroom as a temporary sleeping space until children are old enough to share

“I’m feeling like this might be a long term arrangement, and I guess I just want feel like it’s okay to make my daughter live in a one bedroom during my parenting time.”source ↗

“The biggest hang up I have, though, is the bedroom situation. I think the logical thing to do would be to put the two older kids in a room together and let the baby have his/her own room. But I get cold sweats trying to imagine the horrors that could occur with that situation — the sleep regressions, the two kids keeping or waking each other up, the preschooler goading the toddler to learn to crawl out of her crib early.”source ↗
